Living in La Jolla

Surf. Sun. Science.

The Komor Lab is based at UC San Diego's sprawling main campus on "the Mesa" in La Jolla, 20 minutes north of downtown San Diego. The intellectual environment on the Mesa is a vibrant and collaborative hub with 5 research institutes and a thriving biotech industry. In addition to science, members of the Komor Lab take time to enjoy the sunny Southern California lifestyle outside of work. Some favorite activities pursued by lab members include: surfing, sand volleyball, beach bonfires, sampling San Diego's craft beer selection, and rock climbing.

Komor Lab Values

We are all bonded by a passion for our research, but what makes us stand out is our genuine concern for one another, both as scientists and people. We are a team – everyone has a unique role and is responsible for their own productivity, but we work together toward a shared goal of pursuing innovative research while developing ourselves as the next generation of scientists and leaders.

Komor Lab Outreach

Dr. Komor is the Faculty Adviser of the Society for Women in Graduate Studies (SWIGS) and the Komor lab is also involved in several activities to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion on the UC San Diego campus. The Komor lab is partnered with the local BE WiSE organization, which aims to engage young women and other underrepresented groups in the greater San Diego community. We organize and host workshops with BE WiSE every 6 months where students participate in hands-on activities and interact with PIs, post-docs, and graduate students.

Komor Lab Culture

Everyone is welcome in our laboratory. We acknowledge that when people with different backgrounds come together, we do better science and become better people because we are exposed to different perspectives and ways of approaching problems. At our annual retreat, we define (as a team) our shared responsibilities, expectations, and values. The Komor lab also participates in annual lab camping trips, team 5Ks, and monthly game nights.
